Starting a small business requires some sales activities. If you’re an introvert, the thought of sales probably ranks right up there with visiting your dentist. You have to do it, but you’re just not a fan.
Typically, proficiency at sales tends to be more suited toward extroverts. They tend to enjoy being surrounded by others and enjoy meeting new people. They are often outgoing and can easily manipulate social situations.
If you’re an introvert, this may seem like it doesn’t fit your personality at all. However, today’s sales environment offers unique opportunities to play to your strengths, rather than to force you to become something you’re not.
#1: Be An Awesome Listener
Introverts are great listeners. This can be an effective sales strategy because you make the customer feel great about themselves when you focus on their concerns. People naturally love to talk about themselves – which is great when you need a back and forth to keep a conversation going.
#2: Build Relationships
When many people think of sales, they picture a used car lot and pushy salespeople. You, introvert, have the opportunity to show them something different. It may take you longer to warm up to someone – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When you take longer to get to the sale, you’re building a trust and knowledge about that other person. That relationship can turn into referrals and repeat business.
#3: Be A Problem Solver
Many introverts are highly analytical. This is a great character trait when you need to demonstrate knowledge. Instead of selling a customer on a specific product, you can clearly explain how that product or service solves their specific problem. Instead of a salesperson, you become an expert.
If you’re an introvert and you’re struggling with sales – stop fighting against your nature. What makes you different is going to draw your customers to you in the long run. Play up your strengths and practice as much as you can to build a higher level of comfort with sales.
